Everton secured three points against Burnley after a late strike by substitute James Vaughan and a further goal by Steven Pienaar to lift the Toffees away from the relegation zone.
John: "This is the first win in eight Premier League games, and it is a perfect way to end 2009. It was a tough match, they have a very good keeper in Brian Jensen, but we managed to score twice. I think Moyes did right by bringing on our young striker James Vaughan. Two minutes after his introduction, he scored. The great strike by Steven Pienaar secured the three points, and what is just as important for me - the defence kept a clean sheet!
This was what the whole club was looking forward to - Getting the 3 points we
deserved. We have actually been playing well for a few weeks, but never got
further than a draw. It was quite a busy schedule, after a game on Boxing day, we had one day
off, and the next day we had to play again. Full crowds, good atmosphere, that is what English Football makes so beautifull. I am quite happy about my own appearances. We now have to keep up the good work!
I am confident that this is the start of a new time for Everton. The mood in the squad is lifted so much, and we are ready to climb further up in the Premier League table. I want to thank the faithful fans, who never lost their pateince with us - they are out there, and remind you - Liverpool hasn't exactly been the warmest place to be a spectator lately - but the fans are there for us - and I am so impressed by them. A happy New Year to all you great fans!"
