Against the expensive squad of world class players from Man. City The Toffees proved that devotion, hard work and a steady defense combined with a powerful attack can take you far.
The Belgian, Bilyaletdinov and Saha all had great efforts in the first period, and Saha's determination was rewarded with a free-kick right on the edge of the box 10 minutes before half time.
South African Pienaar's right-footed effort swept in past the left-hand post to put the Toffees deservedly in front. Man City tried to respond, but even though Mancini had brought confidence and victory to the team, this wasn't enough to shake the Blues, though topscorer Tevez came close.
But the Blues responded straight away as Saha charged at goal in added time. He was tugged back as he burst into the boxand the ref did not hesitate in awarding Everton with a spot-kick.
The Frenchman calmly converted the penalty into a 2-0 lead for the home side. This result didn't change after the half time break, and Heitinga and the rest of the defense kept a clean sheet.
John: "This match was a memorable one for all Evertonians, maybe our best in my time and this team is just getting better and better. Great to see that Landon (Donovan ed.) got a fine debut, and that we got a clean sheet and stopped the goal-scoring of Carlos Tevez. I think that Sylvain (Distin ed.) and myself did a good job in the defense."
Fobazo comment:
John Heitinga - by some know as Lionheart - earned his name this day on an electric stadium better known as Goodison Park. He dominated the central defence together with Distin, and we are sure that 2010 is going to be John's year in The Premier League.
